One evening, a neighbor saw Mullah Nasruddin down on his hands and knees, searching frantically for something on the ground beneath a streetlight.
- The neighbor asked, "Nasruddin, what are you doing? Did you lose something?"
- Nasruddin replied, "Yes, I lost the key to my house, and now I can't get inside."
- Wanting to help, the neighbor knelt down beside him. For a long time, both men searched every inch of the illuminated ground, but they found nothing.
- Finally, the neighbor wiped his brow and asked, "Are you absolutely sure you lost the key right here?"
- Nasruddin looked up and said, "Oh, no. I didn't lose it here. I lost it back there, in the dark basement of my house."
- Exploding in frustration, the neighbor shouted, "Then why on earth are we searching for it out here under the streetlight?!"
- Nasruddin answered calmly, "That is simple. Because here, there is plenty of light, but back in the basement, it is far too dark."
