Recognize your present wakefulness

“We need to train in this thought-free wakefulness, but not by meditating on it or imagining it. It is primordially present already. Yet this present wakefulness gets caught up in thinking. To get free of thought, simply recognize; recognize your present wakefulness. Don't forget; don't get distracted. That doesn't mean to sit and force oneself to be undistracted and unforgetting. Trying like that only fouls it up. Simply allow your basic state to be undistracted nonmeditation. When all the activities of dualistic mind dissolve, when we are utterly stable in the unconfined empty cognizance, there is no longer any basis for remaining in the three realms of samsara.
Even if our recognition of rigpa doesn't become uninterrupted throughout day and night - even if we only manage to sustain it short moments many times - the value of training in this practice of recognizing mind essence will become fully evident at the time of death. At some point we are all sure to die; no one escapes that in this world.
Anyone who takes birth dies. If we manage to recognize at the moment when the breath ceases and we are separated from this illusory body, we can in three seconds perfect the strength of that recognition and stabilize it. It becomes the dharmakaya state, just like space mingling with space. It's just like what happens to the space within a vase that breaks: the space inside and the space outside, which were up until this point divided by the side of the vase, become one. Similarly, the ground state of unconstructed dharmakaya, which is the buddha nature present in everyone, and the path dharmakaya, which is the empty cognizance we have trained in, combine into an indivisible unity.”
